How the warning seals (black “EXCESO…” octagons) and the precautionary legends of Mexican front-of-pack labeling are determined. Applies to prepackaged non-alcoholic foods and beverages (confectionery, supplements, foods/fats). Informational content; it does not constitute legal advice.

Nutritional profiles — Third Phase (in force since 10/01/2025)

Evaluation is per 100 g (solids) or per 100 mL (liquids). A seal applies when the value equals or exceeds the threshold. Upon any addition of critical nutrients, all those present are evaluated (numeral 4.5.3).

Precautionary legends

  • “CONTIENE EDULCORANTES, NO RECOMENDABLE EN NIÑOS” — if the ingredient list includes sweeteners.
  • “CONTIENE CAFEÍNA EVITAR EN NIÑOS” — if it contains added caffeine in any amount.

Associated rules

  • Advertising directed at children: a product with ≥1 seal or with the sweeteners legend cannot use on the label children’s characters, animations, drawings, celebrities, athletes, mascots, or interactive elements directed at children (numeral 4.5.5).
  • Association endorsements: a product cannot display seals/endorsements of recommendation if it exceeds one or more critical nutrients or the energy content (numeral 4.1.4).
  • No seals: if none applies, it may declare in writing “Este producto no contiene sellos ni leyendas” on the information surface (numeral 4.1.4 Bis).
  • Seal size (Table A.1, according to the main display surface): ≤5 cm² → ≥15% of the surface ·
    5–30 cm² → 1 × 1.11 cm · >30–60 → 1.5 × 1.66 cm · >60–100 → 2 × 2.22 cm · >100–200 → 2.5 × 2.77 cm · 200–300 → 3 × 3.32 cm · >300 → 3.5 × 3.88 cm.

Mandatory label data (numeral 4.2)

Name/designation · ingredient list in decreasing quantitative order (+ “Contiene” for allergens) · net content/drained mass · name/business name and tax address · country of origin · identification of the batch · expiration date or best-before · nutritional table/declaration.

How the EUM system solves it

The SoT backend/data/compliance/product_classes.json stores these thresholds. Label Studio already generates the label (designer + templates + QR/CVV/barcode); the automatic compliance verification —being integrated on top— takes the product’s nutritional declaration, computes which octagons and legends apply, and warns if a mandatory datum is missing.
